Kunzite

Kunzite is the pink-colored variety of the mineral Spodumene.

It is a silicate of lithium and aluminum, but owes its color to traces of manganese.

It turns out to be quite hard (about 7 on the Mohs scale), and because of its particular system of crystallization, monoclinic, it proves very challenging to facet.

Kunzite is named after gemologist George Frederick Kunz, who discovered this gemstone in 1902 in California.

A self-taught scholar and researcher, thanks to his passion and knowledge he held the position of gem expert at Tiffany & Co. as early as age 23.

His discovery of Kunzite is very important, so much so that it is considered the most important gemological discovery of the twentieth century along with Tanzanite.

Major deposits are currently found in Afghanistan, Brazil, Madagascar and Pakistan.

Actually, the jewelry in that bears these gems is priced at the high end, thanks to the possibility of finding large stones and its natural transparency.

Particularly famous jewelry includes a stone as large as 47 carats mounted on a ring that came from the collection of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, which sold for more than €410,000 at a 1996 Sotheby's auction.

Kunzite is a quintessential feminine gemstone; after all, pink has always been considered the most romantic of colors and is typically associated with love.
